I went along to the classes held in Amersham with my oldest daughter and her
daughter. We had only been to a couple of classes when my grand-daughter
started to sign back to us "All Gone" and "More". We
were chuffed. She loved the singing and the instruments and enjoyed the
time with the other children.
I had always been interested in sign language. At school, about 25
years earlier, I had learned my letters and wanted to learn more, but never got
round to it. When my interest was rekindled with the baby signing, I
looked around for a proper sign language course and have been learning BSL ever
since.
Due to family illness, my grand-daughter did not continue the baby signing
and now lives with me and my husband. When she
moved in she was almost 3 and I started to show her some signs, I was really
pleased as she learned about 40 signs in 3 weeks. She
can now describe animals, colours, relatives and foods in sign. She can
string signs together to make sentences. She is now 5 years old and can
understand a lot and she can sign lots of words.
I looked around for a class that we could go to together in the area, but
could not find any. One thing led to another and I ended up starting my
own classes. My youngest daughter Claire helps me as she is interested in
teaching her daughter Donna sign language. She started when she was only 4
months old by using the sign for milk. Donna could not sign back, but
Claire continued to ask her if she wanted milk until she smiled. Although
she wasn't signing back, Donna was communicating in her way with her mum.
Donna is now 2 and she can sign many more signs and is talking more than most
children of her age.
