There is evidence that children's language abilities are reducing and it is probably due to the pace of life and watching too much TV.  People don't have time to talk to their children  and the TV tends to be on when eating meals.  On Woman's Hour in April there was an interview with members of the Basic Skills Agency who have set up the Talk to Me campaign for 4-6 year olds.  This campaign encourages parents to talk to their children and expand their language abilities.  The interview on Woman's Hour spoke to a mum who had taken her child to baby signing classes who was convinced that this had helped his speech to develop.  Her little boy was at nursery age and in the interview you could hear him talking.  His speech was very clear and precise.  She also said that in contrast to her friends children he did not have the usual tantrums at 18 months to 2½  years as he was able to communicate his needs to her.  She felt that her friends children had tantrums because of their inability to be able to communicate effectively as their vocal skills had not developed fully.
